Bismarck was launched in 1939 and commissioned in 1940, becoming a symbol of Nazi Germany’s naval ambitions. At the time, Bismarck was the largest battleship ever built by Germany and one of the largest in the world. Its main battery consisted of eight 15-inch guns, which gave it the ability to engage enemy ships from a great distance, while its armor protected it from most contemporary weaponry.
The Bismarck’s fame stems from its dramatic engagement with the British fleet during Operation Rheinübung. On May 24, 1941, Bismarck, along with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, engaged and sank the pride of the British Royal Navy, HMS Hood. The sinking of Hood triggered one of the largest naval pursuits in history.

After a prolonged chase across the North Atlantic, the British fleet, aided by aircraft, managed to cripple the Bismarck, leading to its sinking on May 27, 1941.
