LEGO ILMARINEN SHIP MOC
A fitting tribute to one of Finland’s most important naval vessels.

The Ilmarinen was a Finnish coastal defense ship, launched in 1934 as one of two ships in the Väinämöinen class. Named after a character from the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, the Ilmarinen played a key role in Finland’s naval defense strategy.
Designed for coastal protection, the ship was heavily armored and armed with four 254 mm (10-inch) guns, making it a formidable opponent. The Ilmarinen saw action during the Winter War (1939–1940) and the Continuation War (1941–1944), helping defend Finland’s vulnerable coastline from Soviet incursions.
Despite being built to protect Finland’s shores, the Ilmarinen tragically met her end during an operation in 1941. While serving as the flagship in an offensive against the Soviet naval forces, the ship struck a mine and sank, taking 271 of her 350 crew members with her. The loss of Ilmarinen was a significant blow to the Finnish Navy, but her legacy remains a symbol of Finland’s resilience during the tumultuous war years.

The Ilmarinen had a very distinctive observation tower which I replicated by flipping a headlight SNOT brick upwards and attaching it to the primary mast of the ship. Clever don’t you think?
