Launched in 1932, the SS Normandie was considered a symbol of French naval engineering and Art Deco luxury. The Normandie was widely regarded as the most elegant ocean liner of its time, but its service was tragically cut short during World War II when it was converted into a troopship and later caught fire while docked in New York Harbor in 1942.
