The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was an American Great Lakes freighter, famous for its tragic sinking during a storm on Lake Superior on November 10, 1975.
At the time, it was one of the largest freighters on the Great Lakes, measuring 729 feet in length and capable of carrying massive amounts of iron ore.
The Fitzgerald’s sudden disappearance, along with her entire crew of 29, remains one of the most well-known maritime disasters in U.S. history and has inspired numerous memorials, books, and songs, most notably Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

Unlike all my other ship models, the LEGO SS Edmund Fitzgerald has a unique technique used to build the hull. I built it upside down, allowing the hull to be smooth and curved right on the edges in order to imitate the freighter’s real-life structure.
This came with several complications, since both the bow and stern had to feature parts facing upwards in order to accommodate the antenna and communication masts.
Luckily, the entire structure is kept attached with a very precise placement of SNOT-type bricks at the front and the rear of the ship.
