LEGO TITAN SUBMERSIBLE MOC

This LEGO Oceangate Titan Submersible MOC is a 1:50 recreation of the submersible that disappeared in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean during a tragic expedition towards the RMS Titanic.

TECHNIQUES

The trickiest part in designing this LEGO MOC was actually aligning the tail fin with the top of the submersible. The Titan had a flat cone at the back which isn’t something that LEGO made as an individual piece. Instead, I had to connect a mix of side panels, slopes and brackets to make the rear end of the submersible more or less close to the real thing.

This model also include a video game controller lodged inside of the cylindric hull.

HISTORY

Titan, initially known as Cyclops 2, was a submersible designed and operated by OceanGate, an underwater exploration company. It boasted a maximum depth capability of 4,000 meters (13,000 feet), making it the first privately-owned submersible to reach such depths. Notably, it was also the first crewed submersible with a hull constructed from titanium and carbon fiber composite materials.

After successful testing dives to its maximum depth in 2018 and 2019, Titan’s original composite hull developed fatigue damage, leading to its replacement by 2021. In the same year, OceanGate commenced transporting paying customers to explore the wreck of the Titanic, completing multiple dives to the site in 2021 and 2022.

However, tragedy struck during Titan’s first expedition in 2023, resulting in the loss of all five occupants when the vessel imploded. OceanGate lost contact with Titan on June 18, prompting authorities to initiate a massive international search and rescue operation. The search concluded on June 22 after debris from Titan was discovered approximately 1,600 feet (500 meters) from the bow of the Titanic.
